Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve

Thick flora looking up in a Costa Rican forest during a hike

The hike is on the southern end of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica. On the west coast in Puntarenas Province, this nature reserve is not lacking in flora and fauna.

Winding through the conservation area I heard the spooky sounds of the howler monkeys long before I hiked further down and spotted them up in the canopy. If you have never heard them, you can check them out here. Its a bit like the opening season of Lost.

Pelicans in the Pacific Ocean along the shoreline in Costa Rica

You’ll find small streams, but no major water crossings. Eventually the trail opens up from dense forest to a relatively secluded beach. It’s a nice contrast to be within thick forest, then suddenly funnel out to the open expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Tons of pelicans were swooping around the water.

The Sueco Trail will snake through the reserve for a few miles until you come to Playa Cabo Blanco and the Pacific Ocean. Have a look at a basic trail map.
